What are Medical Certificates?
Medical certificates, also known as sick certificates and doctor certificates, are official documents issued by registered healthcare practitioners that document a patient’s illness, injury, or their inability to work, study, or perform specific activities.
Types of Medical Certificates
There are two main types of medical certificates online, the Single-Day Certificate and the Multiple Day Certificate.
The former is valid for one day only, typically for short-term illnesses or recovery from minor procedures.
Multiple Day Certificates however go up to 6 or 7 days and are issued for ongoing medical conditions.
Requirements for Medical Certificates

The Pharmacist’s Role in Verification
While not responsible for diagnosing or treating illnesses, pharmacists can and do issue medical certificates. The process requires them to:
Check for Validity: Ensure the certificate has the necessary and correct information.
Confirm Patient Identity: Match the certificate details with the patient’s ID to prevent misuse.
Document and Report: Record the details of the certificate in the patient’s file and report any concerns regarding its validity or potential medication misuse to the appropriate authorities.
